The Latest on the Lowes

We started this blog to share the transformation of our 1926 fixer...but with time and the addition of kids it has become my way of documenting two childhoods...the triumphs, moments of hilarity, lessons learned and everything in between.

The time blur

Baby boy is already two months old and while I know I've lived the past two months, when I look back on them it's through a heavy veil of tired fog. It's amazing how time can simultaneously fly by and creep along so very, very slowly.

Fortunately I had enough sense to email myself notes when one or both of the kids did something I knew I wouldn't want to forget. Among my notes:

- One of the highlights of Lily's week is "slumber party" on Friday...the one time she is allowed carte blanche to sleep in our room. This has become particularly important as she clearly isn't a fan of Matteo being the co-sleeper, resulting in many sleep struggles since he's come home. Lily isn't exactly a peaceful sleeper, but she has never been a talker...until now. I've always wondered what she dreams about and now I know: "Mama....candy lollipop." Yep, that's my girl

- Not really a milestone, but I think it's cute that Matteo seems to have lots of room to grow his onsies, but the foot portion is now totally filled - yes, he got his daddy's feet

- While Lily loves all the things that go with being a big girl....bike riding, playing Kinect, etc...she still likes to be the little one when it suits her. The other day I asked her to grab something for me that wound up being too high, which she informed me by saying "I can't reach it because I'm just a little girl -I'm only 4-and-a-half-years-old!"

- Matteo loves the papasan chair Lily roosted in as a baby. Unlike Lily, though, he could care less about the vibration mode since he is an auditory soother and enjoys a nice "shhhhhhh" (the iPhone White Noise app is a real hit - there really IS an app for everything!). Recently, Lily has taken it upon herself to share the chair's many features with him, especially the sounds and music. My guess is because when his little arms and legs flail she is certain "he's dancing!"

- The iPhone has been a favorite of Lily's since I got it, but despite having many age-appropriate games, Lily likes to try her hand at my favorites. Recently she was delighted to show me how she was able to spell a word in Scrabble all by herself. Her first ever Scrabble word? "Shiv"

- 4th of July can be a real bust in cloudy Seattle and as Lily had been such a trooper I wanted to treat her to something extra fun, so we loaded up the family and took out first road trip to Suncadia. The pools, outdoor fire pit and in-room movies were all a huge hit (the s'mores not so much), but poor Matteo projectile vomited twice (an expensive ultrasound later it turned out it thankfully wasn't pyloric stenosis, but that as long as I am a food source garlic is NOT an option) so we ended up packing up a tad early. While watching the bellman load up the cart, Lily looked at me and said "but Mama, I'm still having fun." Poor kiddo - we'll have more fun - I promise!

- And last but far from least, Matteo hit my favorite milestone in July....SMILES. And he doesn't just smile, he flirts. His nose wrinkles and he cocks his head to the side, ear touching shoulder. It melts my heart. Every. Single. Time.
